PRIOR/GROT. DEEP BURIAL CASSETTE
ANNIHILVS is proud to present this split release by Hampshire, UK artists PRIOR and GROT.
A conjoined freak, a two-headed calf, a union of filth and decay, the deep, lo-fi darkness of PRIOR is balanced perfectly with the grotesque rawness of GROT; DEEP BURIAL is a concatenation facilitated by circumstances not likely to recur, the result of friendships made during the end times, of strangers joining hands to ring in the dawn of armageddon.

”Prior began as a defiant self-creation in the vein of Anna Kavan, making noise as the second half of RESECTION and DECOHERENCE.
The formation of the split was very serendipitous - not only meeting a like-minded music fan, but also a like-minded musician, living practically next door via label nearly 3000 miles away. Making music together was a forgone conclusion.
The 3 Prior tracks were recorded in a cortical-fueled frenzy, drawing influences from Mz.412, Hold Me Down and Brighter Death Now."

"EVERYTHING IS BLURRY
But I remember that I had known [Lee from] ANNIHILVS for a while, maybe a year or so. My first label release The Face of GROT had been out for a few months. The world was riddled with disease and politics had reached new, dangerous levels of absurdity.
EVERYTHING IS FUCKED
But on a personal level, for the first time in my adult life I felt like I was getting somewhere. Mentally and emotionally I felt in control, or maybe a better way to put it is not overwhelmed. I’d managed to figure out some of what I wanted from life, and also that what I wanted was acceptable and achievable.
NOISE
Something about its liminality, its potential, its vagueness appeals to me deeply. The contrariness. The deliberate nature. The intent. The process. Noise as art, as a genre, as a means of expression, as a tool for connection …
So when PRIOR contacted me, and it became apparent that we live about twenty minutes away from each other, it felt like the affirmation of GROT.
Having a mutual friend in ANNIHILVS, 3000 miles away, seemed like such an unlikely way for our paths to cross, and up until this point I don’t think I had actually met someone, other than online, that was into Noise. It all felt somewhat unreal, more blur for the blurriness.
I can kind of remember a conversation where the idea of doing a collab or split was proposed. Then we got the title. Then I procrastinated for a while.
I’m still not 100% sure what GROT is, but for DEEP BURIAL I decided on a collagic approach. I wanted to create a melange of GROT. Combine field recordings with deliberate sounds. A number of small tracks fused into one object. It’s a short film, a novella, a one shot comic book, a cinematic poem. It’s GROT cutting his way out of the corpse of a giant animal. It’s my favourite birth defect. It’s noise with noise on top."
